Recently with the opening of Baoji-Lanzhou Fast Train, Silk Road tour became hotter because the time spent on way was remarkably shortened. Flight is rather expensive, normal train is too slow, so the fast train becomes the top choice as inter city transportation for many tourist.
Though each part of the Silk Road is indeed attractive, due to time limit, some people can not cover the entire Silk Road. So we advise you break that tour down to two part. One part for Xinjiang tour (usually 7-10 days) and other Silk Road cities in China. Regarding these “other cities” we recommend Xian, Lanzhou, Xining, Dunhuang, Zhangye. With visit to these Silk Road destinations, you will get a better idea about the ancient route.
Xian – Home Town of Terracotta Warriors and Horses
Many people didn’t go to China will search a question on Google: where can I see the terracotta warriors? The answer is Xian which is famous all over the world due to Terracotta Warriors. So lots of people will visit Xian in their first or second China tour. While if you have never been to Xian before, choosing Xian as the starting city as your Silk Road tour will be a good idea.

Lanzhou –Strong Military Construction in Ancient Time
Lanzhou was the important hub along Silk Road. As early as in 5000 years ago human start living there. From the Han Dynasty to the Song Dynasty, with the opening and developing of Silk Road, Lanzhou became an important trading hub for silk export and western horse import.
Attractions we recommend in Lanzhou: Mother Statue of Yellow River, Zhongshan Bridge, Binglingsi Grottoes.
Xining – Roof of the World
Xining is 220km from Lanzhou. It is the eastern exit of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the must pass place of ancient Silk Road and Tang-fan Road (the road connects Chang’an and Tibet). Xining is one of the cities have highest altitude in the world.

Dunhuang – The Throat of Silk Road
Dunhuang city locates at the west head of Hexi Corridor where the frontiers of Gansu Province, Gansu Province, and Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Dunhuang is acknowledged as the pearl along Silk Road.

Zhangye – Colorful Landform
Zhangye locates at northwest of Gansu Province and at the mid of Hexi Corridor. It is the important path of land communications between Central Asia and China. The long history, rich culture, beautiful natural scenery, and unique folk culture endow Zhangye with much more attraction.
