Turpan in Xianjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is an old city with a long history. The city’s name means ‘the lowest place’ in the Uygur language. Lying in the Turpan Basin, the elevation of most of the places in the area is below 500 meters. Turpan is the city with the lowest elevation in China. Because of its location and altitude, Turpanis the hottest place in China. The annual average temperature is 14 degree centigrade. The days above 40 degree centigrade can last nearly one month.

Though the extremely high temperature are unbearable to most people, the abundant sunshine gives the melons and grapes ideal conditions to grow. The fruit here is widely known for its high sugar content, especially the grapes. Tourists travel to Turpan in August will have the chance to enjoy hundreds of kinds of grapes and other fruits. From late August to early September, the yearly Grape Festival is held to celebrate the harvest of grapes. So August is recommended as the best time to visit Turpan.

Apart from that, the locals are quite fond of sand therapy. People lie or sit under sheds, covering their bodies with thick hot sand about 50C to 60C to treat rheumatism and skin ailments.
